Welcome to River’s Journey Counseling!
I am Mary Madsen-Heskin, practice owner and solo therapist (also called counselor or clinician) at River’s Journey Counseling.
Since 1998, I have provided counseling services in residential, inpatient, and outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment settings. Although my work at not-for-profit agencies was fulfilling; I always felt like there was a piece missing to my therapeutic scope. I was not able to explore a more holistic approach with clients or offer non-traditional opportunities for relaxation, stress management and personal growth.
I opened my private practice, River’s Journey Counseling in 2013, with the hope that all of my clients would find a safe and healing space; to discover and explore all facets of the self on their journey to change.
At River’s Journey Counseling, I am bridging the gap between traditional talk therapy (counseling) and wellness services (Reiki) to assist young adults and adults in reaching their fullest potential.
You will not find “cookie-cutter” therapy when you engage in services with me! I utilize an integrative, holistic (mind-body-spirit) and Person-Centered Therapy style to best meet your needs and goals. We will work together to change any negative and faulty thought patterns, beliefs, and behaviors that are keeping you feeling “stuck” in life (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). I will help you to focus on real-life solutions (Solution Focused Therapy) to create positive change in your life. You will learn to tap into your strengths and increase your sense of self-assurance; knowing you have the skills to tackle life’s ups and downs (Strength-Based Therapy).
To better assist you in practicing self-care, relaxation, stress management and for facilitating a deeper level of healing and personal growth; I can incorporate Energy Psychology with techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or “tapping”) and Reiki into our sessions or schedule separate sessions just for Reiki.
Together we will create strategies for managing moods, maintaining recovery, fostering healthy relationships, feeling fulfilled with school or work, and/or managing other life challenges. I will provide support along the way; assisting you on your journey to feeling more confident, satisfied and active in your life.
I believe in equality. I believe diversity is what makes life so beautiful and rich. All sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions are welcome in my office. I believe we are stronger; together.
And you are stronger than you realize. You have a place in this world that is uniquely yours.
I am so honored you decided to share your path with me.
