I blindly stumbled into Reiki (pronounced “Ray-Key”).
After too many years of inconsistently putting my needs first; I was running on empty. I had allowed myself to become over-worked, over-whelmed and a big bundle of stress. My mind was cluttered with an endless to-do list, my body was exhausted and my spirit was being worn down.
I needed time for me. Time for a refresh. And most importantly, an upgrade in my self-care plan.
I had never heard of Reiki when I received my first Reiki session. I thought it sounded a little “new-age”. A little too “woo woo”. If I did not trust the person who introduced it to me; I am pretty sure I would have politely declined and never gave it a second thought.
During my first Reiki session, I didn’t understand how or why it worked the way it did. But my body was tingling, it felt somehow lighter, and I was soooo relaxed. That alone was enough for me to schedule a second session.
I received Reiki as a client and loved the experience.
Then I received Reiki attunement and training; and I fell in love with Reiki.
Over time with Reiki and self-Reiki sessions, I experienced a decrease in frequency and intensity of headaches, an increase in the function of my sluggish thyroid, a return to solid sleep and a new creative spark for my work. Reiki became an important element in my self-care routine. It grounded me, guided me and allowed me receive more positive experiences into my personal and professional life.
Incorporating Reiki into my private practice was also a stumbling-into-it process. I had never thought about incorporating it into my counseling private practice; but when it was suggested a huge lightbulb flashed on within my mind.
Combining traditional talk therapy and Reiki sessions into my practice rekindled my passion for supporting clients on their emotional healing journey. I could provide a more holistic approach with clients and offer non-traditional opportunities for relaxation, stress management and personal growth. My hope is that all of my clients find a safe and healing space at River’s Journey Counseling; to discover, explore and include all facets of the self which hinges on the mind-body-spirit connection of holistic care.
So…what is Reiki?
Reiki is a natural, simple energy balancing and healing technique. The meaning of the word Reiki is Universal Life Energy. “Life Energy” is always flowing around and within us, along pathways called Chakras or Meridians.
Sometimes the energy within our body becomes disrupted or blocked due to stress, other emotional issues and/or physical conditions. The stagnant energy in the chakras can create additional mental, emotional, physical or spiritual strain for the individual. Reiki allows the Life Energy to flow normally and naturally and assists the body to regain balance and heal.
Still seems a little “new-age”, right?
Dr. Mikao Usui is credited as the founder of the Usui System of Reiki in the early 1920’s in Japan. But researchers have traced Reiki’s original roots to Tibetan texts that are over 1000 years old. The chakras system was mapped out and discussed in Indian texts which are over 3000 years old. So, maybe not so “new”.
Benefits of Reiki:
